Editorial
It is the start of 2026. On behalf of the IIUG Board I am wishing you a happy new year.
2025 was better than 2024 for Informix and Informix users. We hope 2026 will be even better.
In 2025, Stuart Litel and Carlton Doe passed away. Both made huge contributions to Informix and the Informix user community. They have been missed. On the other hand, we were thrilled to welcome Mark Jamison back into the heart of the IBM Informix family.

Continuing Our Commitment to the Informix Community
For decades, the International Informix Users Group (IIUG) has been committed to supporting our global community of Informix users. That commitment remains as strong today as ever and will continue well into the future.
One illustration of our long-standing presence is the enduring availability of resources created many years ago. The last known publicly accessible web-based forensic discussion related to Informix dates back to November 2005—more than twenty years ago. Remarkably, this historical content is still available online. For reference, you can access the archived post and the website here:
http://old.iiug.org/forums/ids/index.cgi/read/6012
Despite the age of these materials, they continue to show the depth of knowledge and collaboration that has always defined our user community.
As we look ahead, we want to reassure all Informix professionals, administrators, and enthusiasts that IIUG will continue to provide support, resources, and advocacy. Our mission remains focused on strengthening the Informix ecosystem and ensuring that users have access to the guidance they need.
Thank you for being part of this journey and for the trust you continue to place in IIUG.

Hidden Gems
LOGBUF_INTVL
Use the LOGBUF_INTVL configuration parameter to specify the frequency, expressed in seconds, at which the database server checks to determine whether a logical log buffer flush is needed. Flushing periodically may benefit an instance that uses buffered logging and experiences idle periods during the day. Records will not be allowed to remain in the log buffer longer than LOGBUF_INTVL seconds before they are flushed to the logical log on disk.
DUMPSHMEM
In HCL Informix, DUMPSHMEM is a configuration parameter within the onconfig file that controls whether a shared memory dump file is created when an assertion failure occurs in the database server. This dump file is a snapshot of the database server’s shared memory at the time of the failure, which can be crucial for diagnosing the root cause of issues. Values:
0 = Do not create a shared memory dump.
1 = Create a shared memory dump of all the shared memory that the database uses.
2 = Create a shared memory dump that excludes the buffer pools.
5 = Enables the managed shared memory dump feature. When permitted, create a shared memory dump of all the shared memory that the database uses.
6 = Enables the managed shared memory dump feature. When permitted, create a shared memory dump that excludes the buffer pools.

Title: Understanding How Indexes work, what type of Indexes there are, and basic Performance tuning considerations
Date: Thursday, January 15, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM EST
Speaker: Mark Jamison
Description: In today’s performance driven world we often view indexes as a necessity, but rarely understand the components, what indexes are truly doing and how to streamline the indexes in a fashion that provides better performance for them and by extension the queries they were meant to speed up. In this presentation we will cover the fundamental components of B+ indices, which is Informix’ primary index type, and then covering the key aspect of index cleaning as well as how to make indices more performant.
