Discovering and using IBM Warehouse Accelerator
An IBM Proof of Technology

You're Invited!

Date:  Feb 24th, 2012
Time:  9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Location:  Minneapolis, MN

Introduction

In 2011, IBM released the IBM Warehouse Accelerator - the accumulation of work from the IBM labs in San Jose and Germany to bring 'Google like' performance to your corporate data. Originally called 'BLINK', this project looked to bring to market technology that would take data warehousing/reporting queries from minutes-and-hours down to seconds with the use of cheaper memory and processing power with the use of columnar data stores and compressing that data down to maximize that use of RAM.

The final product - IBM Warehouse Accelerator (IWA) - is a columnar database that utilizes all in-memory storage and access methods and deep compression to bring very high concurrent user counts with the fastest response times at the least cost. IWA provides extreme performance while removing most of the tuning required for traditional data warehouses. No use of indexes. No use of temp spaces. No tuning parameters to manage or maintain. It is designed to process large, data warehousing datasets within seconds.

Objective

In this Proof of Technology, participants will get hands-on with the IWA by going thru installation, configuration, operating and monitoring. Participants will also learn how to analyze their current query workload to learn how best to deploy a data mart.

Audience

This Proof of Technology is specifically targeted for Application and Data Architects, Database Administrators as well as Line-of Business owners who are evaluating architectural and data server solutions for their environments. It is also of great value to ISV's, IBM Business Partners and others who are looking for the best database engine to integrate into their solution for resale to others. Some prerequisite knowledge of IBM Informix is very helpful but not required. It is recommended that students have an understanding of data server technology, data server administration as well as general data programming. The labs will be executed in a Linux environment so a basic fluency in Linux/Unix commands, including the vi editor is helpful.

Agenda

This PoT includes an educational presentation explaining the IWA technology in detail. This is followed by an in-depth, hands-on experience where participants will apply and use almost all the concepts taught during the educational portion of the Proof. By the end of the day, participants will have created and used a very broad spectrum of the Warehouse Accelerator technology to run a complex BI workload adapted from an industry standard benchmark.

Cost

This session is free of charge. Complimentary refreshments including continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. However, participants are responsible for their own business travel expenses.

Schedule

For your convenience, registration and continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 AM. The session will start at 9:00 AM and end at approximately 4:30 PM.
