CPU architecture has 4 special purpose registers for shared memory base addresses. Accessing more than 4 segments causes these addresses to thrash. Use of RESIDENT -1 is very important as is monitoring additional virtual segments so they can be folded into the initial virtual segment size next restart.
Applications that make heavy use of shared memory should avoid shared memory connections to the server for the same reasons.
