Indexing Strategies: Guidelines

• Index columns:

  • used in joining tables
  • used as filters
  • used in ORDER BY’s and GROUP BY’s

• Avoid highly duplicate columns

• Keep key size small

• Limit indexes on highly volatile tables

• Use the FILL FACTOR option (version 7)
