Informix User Group of Colorado – Training Day 2002

On May 22, 2002, the Informix User Group of Colorado held their annual training day for a phenomenal turnout of 78 at the Aurora Public Library in Aurora, Colorado.

The Colorado users attended a dual-track training day that consisted of presentations by Carlton Doe, Mike Lowe, John Miller III, Bruce Norquist (ArtinSoft), Jacques Roy, Don Bizell & Peter Reidy (4Js), Dan Farrell, and Tony Setter (Brio).

These powerhouse presenters were able to give us a mini-Informix User Conference right here in our own backyard. Users were able to choose from an Application/New User track or the Deep-Level DBA track. Everything from 4GL migration to Deep-Level Performance Tuning was available.

The almost 80 users were treated to a spectacular breakfast and lunch by The Blue Rose catering company. IBM generously sponsored the food and rooms for the event as well as the numerous IBM speakers that honored us with their presence. We also held a networking exercise where members filled out sheets and met other people in the group. They were requested to find out the names, titles and an interesting characteristic or hobby from other members. This was a lot of fun and we highly recommend it. The members got to meet each other, and then, we chose prizewinners from the completed sheets. Special Thanks to the IIUG and IBM for sending giveaways.

Many members have already commented on the benefits of the event, whether it be networking or broadening of skill sets due to the training provided. The event was a great success and we are looking forward to improving upon it next time.

IUGOC Meeting Recap

Meeting Date: March 13,2002

The Informix User Group of Colorado held its meeting on Wednesday, March 13, 2002.

Despite unusually heavy Denver traffic, the users came through and the meeting room was packed. Presentations were given to a "standing-room-only" crowd. We had a whopping 44 people attend. This was more than the attendance last year at our group's biggest event, Training Day.

Thanks to IBM, the crowd was kept happy with nice-sized room and breakfast goodies and beverages.

Jon Keener kicked off the meeting with a welcome to the crowd and introductions of the board.

He was followed by our International Informix Users Group Liaison, Paul Mosser. Paul presented the benefits of membership and let the users know about events that were coming up.

Next was Mark Scranton who did a presentation on "The Top 10 Things an Informix DBA Should Know". Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation slides. Mark kept the crowd jumping with great tips, slides that were numbered in binary and jokes on how knowing Informix Internals will improve your love life. If the users weren't already fans, they are now. We were also honored with the presence of Mike Lowe, who Mark drew on for support. It was nice to see the rapport between these two highly respected trainers. Hey - maybe we can get a duet presentation sometime!

Our "Clean-Up Hitter" was Carlton Doe. Carlton hit the Grand Slam we were expecting and did a summarized encore presentation of "7.X to 9.X Migration". His presentation went so well, that we've already had requests for his slides. Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation slides.

The meeting was punctuated with raffles. We were able to give gifts to all our users from our sponsors: IBM, The International Informix Users Group, Advanced DataTools Corporation and Xtivia.

The IUGOC Board finished-up the meeting by thanking everyone for coming, announcing openings on the board and asking for feedback, help and ideas.

We consider it a terrific success!
