For what its worth, there would be value and worthwhile for IBM to port INFORMIX-SQL to the Windows environment. Believe it or not, there still are a ton of ISQL-DOS based apps running out there since 1990!.. Mine is one of them ISQL2.10.06E and 4.10DD6. I have it running with no problems on MS-DOS 6.22 in both native DOS machines as well as within Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 on Windows 7 7, Vista and XP. I also have my app integrated with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, Access. The DOS drive F: is linked to a USB flash drive, LPT1: linked to HP Laser printer, drive W: linked to Windows Desktop and several other logical DOS drives to other Windows folders.. There still is value in ISQL for quickly prototyping an app, development purposes and to migrate to the UX world!.. I recently installed Informix 11.70 for Windows and noticed that dbaccess is very similar to the isql menu driven interface (minus Perform and Ace).. How much of an effort would be involved in porting ISQL to Windows?.. I'd like to help, if necessary!

Great Genero new video from IBM

IBM have today put this great new video on youtube which really highlights the case for the use of Genero for the production of new systems as well as for modernizing old I4GL apps.

JDBC remote connection to Informix SE 7.22
Posted by: craig@coot.net (CRAIG ANDERSON) - Sat, 31 Mar 2012 13:01:38 EDT
I work at a call center with a number of older phone switches that use Informix for reporting. OS and Informix releases are:
INFORMIX-SE 7.22.UC2 64-bit UltraSPARC release. Solaris 7 SunOS 5.7
I'm working on connecting to the report database and developing some custom reports. The remote report box will be running windows, my preference is use Java (JRuby actually) and a JDBC interface. I have installed the Informix JDBC Driver jar files version 3.70.JC4 from IBM.
So far I've collected some JDBC examples and demonstrated that I can import the com.informix.jdbc.IfxDriver and java_import java.sql.DriverManager classes. I'm working on the Connection URL string to use and trying to verify that the TLI using TCP/IP is configured to allow the remote connection.
This is a fun project for me, I'll report success and ask questions as I go.
I'm hoping there are some folks with experience doing this on the forum.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the great explanation. We're using the Informix 3.50 JDBC driver to connect to Online from the JBoss app server. We're still looking into this but it looks like the application server is performing the codeset conversion but the application is not sending the properly formatted message. It sends the text in an email message. One message is properly formatted and another it sends out is not. So I think we have more to dig into in the application.
Thanks,
Bob

In short, a best practice for update statistics is....
NEVER run it inside an BEGIN/COMMIT.
If you let update statistics manage the transaction you will be much happier.

One of the most read articles... Update statistics must update data in systables. If you run it inside a transaction and keep it opened than you'll keep the lock...
This used to happen "automatically" with ANSI databases (fixed in 11.50.xC6 I believe). Regards.

I was browsing some information on Fernando Nunes's Blog and found this information
http://informix-technology.blogspot.in/2006/10/when-exclusive-is-not-really-exclusive.html
When trying to reproduce the same scenario i noticed that there is another script getting executed in parallel which executes update statistics on few tables used in the select query which failed..
This update statistics was embedded in a transaction.
-- BEGIN WORK; UPDATE STATISTICS FOR TABLE clm_surrender; COMMIT; --
Whether this will create an exclusive lock on table - clm_surrender ?
Please advice.

Hi Gurus,
Need your help & suggestions for this error.
Suprisingly one of my query which worked fine before is failing now in the prepare part itself.
The error log contains the following error code.
<-- SQL(-211,-107,0) [systables] Cannot read system catalog (systables).
ISAM error: record is locked. -->
My select query contains only transactional tables from different databases. Table - systables was not used in my select query.
I am using Informix 11.5 version on HP UNIX.
Kindly let me know if any more info is needed.
Cheers, Manney

In 8859-1, the byte value for ï is 0xEF, for ¿ is 0xBF, for ½ is 0xBD, for é is 0xE9. Somehow, you are getting a triple 0xEF, 0xBF, 0xBD. When treated as a UTF-8 character, that represents U+FFFD, which is REPLACEMENT CHARACTER 'used to replace an incoming character whose value is unknown or unrepresented in Unicode'. The 0xE9 byte is itself valid in UTF-8, but only if it is followed by 2 continuation bytes in the range 0x80..0xBF (which it is not in this example). It so happens that your text only shows é (LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH ACUTE in Unicode jargon); I imagine that any other character from ISO 8859-1 in the range 0x80..0xFF also appears as the 鿽 sequence.
So, it appears likely to me that the data is stored accurately in the database in 8859-1, but the client software is unaware that it needs to do codeset conversion from 8859-1 to UTF-8. So, when the Java code sees the 0xE9 byte, it looks for continuation bytes, doesn't find them, and maps the invalid character to the replacement character. (The alternative would be to reject the data altogether.)
Informix OnLine 5 pre-dates the GLS (Global Language Support) functionality that would allow for different code sets to be handled properly.
I wonder - which software are you using to connect JBoss to OnLine?
Can you configure it to do codeset conversion between UTF-8 and 8859-1 as it travels between the client and the server. In GLS, the client is expected to do the codeset conversion. That is, the GLS-enabled clients convert strings from the client 'locale', meaning codeset, as specified by the CLIENT_LOCALE environment variable, to the database 'locale' (codeset) as specified by the DATABASE_LOCALE environment variable. The ESQL/C 5.x software does not do this; it was never specified to do so.
If you need both UTF-8 and 8859-1 to be stored, then the best solution is an upgrade to IDS 11 (earlier versions of IDS, from 7.20 onwards, have GLS support but are out of marketing and/or service now) and the corresponding CSDK and JDBC. That is a moderately major exercise though.

Character set encoding incompatibility
Posted by: robert.kruse@galaxyhotelsystems.com (BOB KRUSE) - Thu, 02 Feb 2012 16:04:17 EST
Greetings,
I'm loading French text into our Informix 5 database server to be read by our Java application which accesses the database server through a JBoss application server. The character set for Informix 5 is the default ISO8859-1. The setting we have for the JBoss application server is UTF-8. This seems to be causing some problems with transposition of characters when the application prints the French text. The French text is part of the extended ASCII character set. Has anyone had any experience with this and any suggestions on how we could resolve this issue?
Thanks,
Bob
A sample is:

Greetings,
I'm loading French text into our Informix 5 database server to be read by our Java application which accesses the database server through a JBoss application server.
Thanks,
Bob
