IDS New Feature Requests - 2007

Oracle / Sql Server / DB2 / Postgres features requested Snapshot database (like Oracle, based on the backup code that salvages the before images of every page that changes after backup started)
Full database encryption... AFAIK Oracle supports this with Oracle Vault...
utility to convert database locale DB compacting like SHRINKDATABASE command in MS SQL or ALTER TABLE SHRINK in Oracle synonyms to remote databases with different locale
DB2 style of redirected restore from one dbspace to multiple dbspaces.
Add WITH CUBE and WITH ROLLUP syntax similar to Microsoft SQL Server
partition by dimension same as db2
DB2 and Oracle are both very well supported to work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 as linked servers and with SQL Server Analysis Services (to create cubes from). Let's get that same level of support for IDS!!! Currently there is NO support for IDS with Analysis Services and linked support functionality is minila at best.
Add the ability to do a snap mirror of the database as you culd to with SQL-server, Oracle with help of an 3:rd part SW.
External Tables. Oracle has them. Netezza has them. XPS has them. Put them in IDS. *PLEASE*
I would like to see "upsert" feature similiar to Oracle and DB2. Insert/Update = if a row already exists, it will check if the row being inserted has new information compared to the existing row, it will update with new information. It is helpful in onpload utility- when I use it, it will just reject all duplicate rows without checking if similiar rows can be updated with new information
implement EXPLAIN like in postgresql, get the SET EXPLAIN output in the client.

In Microsoft Windows Server environments, the ability to write functions and stored procedures in C#/VB.NET; - "anydata" data type; Savepoints (like Oracle: rollback to savepoint ...); - "Nested" transactions (like Oracle)

Instead of implementing materialized views like in Oracle, implement MQT's like in DB2

Add virtual buffer/lock/logical log pools that can be bound as required to each database in a server (as per SQLServer; provide bundled GUI admin/monitoring tool (as per SQLServer, 3rd party AGS doesn't count, not at $000s US!!)

More Data Warehouse features, for customers who do not want to consider DB2 as an alternative. 6. Incorporate HPL features to dbexport and dbimport, like DB2.
ER monitoring tools or API - that shows the sync status of 2 or more nodes involved in ER i.e. at any moment similar to what SQL Server Merge replication status can be found using Replication Monitor tools.
Better DBA tools (e.g., like pgAdmin III for Postgresql).
Something similar to Oracle's event 10046 and 10053 tracing
I would really like to stress the deep data compression as i have seen it in action in DB2. My SAP databases (on Oracle and Informix) were converted to DB2 9 this summer with compression on many of the tables. the informix database of 1.2 TB became a DB2 database of 591 GB. Granted we had to change databases because of SAP, but the compression was a critical factor in our decision.... we have 9 copies of the production database (including production), not counting the number of EMC mirrors. THis is a huge space savings and worthy of implementing in informix. our SAP oracle system went from 800GB to 670GB on DB2 9, again a significant space savings considering we have 5 copies of this database. automating statistics like DB2 runstats i believe is also critical, but be careful with it... we have autorunstats on in DB2 and it appears to be creating many more trans logs than informix did. if auto-statistics is implemented, please add features so it can be easily turned on/off and pick up where it left off, etc... this will give the DBA more flexibility... i am looking at scripting DB2 runstats to only run certain times of the day or every other day not because it impacts performance (It does not), but because of the amount of trans logs produced. ALSO - please DO NOT increase the amount of information sent to the online.log. Informix is practically perfect in its amount of online.log information. for example, i use onbar... it takes 3 online.log messages to tell me a log is full and been backed up. it takes 42 lines in db2diag.log (like online.log) to tell me the same thing (and that's just insane)... also on a db restore, informix does it so short and beautifully, i have seen DB2 spew out 60,000+ lines of db2diag.log info (and i gave up counting)... some IBM'ers have told me DB2 is a "chatty kathy".... well ok, i can learn to live with that... but please do not crucify informix to be like that. if you would like further insight from a longtime informix DBA with Oracle experience and newly gaining DB2 9 experience, feel free to contact me. i very much want you to preserve the integrity and beauty of informix while enhancing it. thank you!
