||Sharding - a different way to look at your data|
|Sharding is another (new?) way to partition a data set across multiple nodes. Informix added sharding support as part of its NoSQL/JSON functionality and has continued to enhance its sharding support over the 12.10 releases. Sharding can be very useful for traditional relational data as well, however. For some use cases, it can be a good approach to split your data set across multiple machines. But, like all other data access strategies, there are pros and cons for this mechanism. We will discuss sharding in general, as compared to other data access strategies, as well as when it might be beneficial.
