Insider Profiles IIUG Director Neil Truby

Q: How do you use Informix in your "real" job (DBA, Consultant, Developer, etc.)?
A: After a number of years as a DBA - from Adabas through DB2 to Informix, I am now a director of a UK consultancy. Although we focus on IBM Data Management products, we have other specialties too - storage management for example - so my main use of Informix is either as a straight DBA when it's my turn on the support rota, or doing more innovative consultancy, such as integration with storage area networks to improve back-up and restore times.

Q: How long have you been using Informix products?
A: I started in 1994, administering a helpdesk system for Canadian reinsurance giants Aon.

Q: What is your role on the IIUG Board?
A: I am one of the directors, and so share the collective responsibility the Board of Directors has for the management of the IIUG. I have the specific responsibility, along with Nancy Balsbaugh, for managing the IIUG's efforts at conferences, both its own, and at other IBM events where an IIUG presence is needed.

The IIUG has made strenuous and successful efforts in the past year to broaden the international element of its work, and the membership figures - whereby the USA for the first time represents less than 50% of the total IIUG membership - reflect this. I am one of two "international" (ie non-American) Board members. This sometimes helps me encourage a more global view.

Q: Why did you volunteer to be on the board?
A: I care a great deal about the future of Informix products. I have administered a number of databases including Oracle, and although SQL Server is improving rapidly, none in my view touches IDS for quality. I am very concerned to see that IBM uses its valuable acquisition wisely, and that the interests of users both large and small are fought for.

I have substantial experience in volunteer organisations, and really believe I can add some value.

Q: What do you want to accomplish this year on the Board?
A: I want to ensure that the IIUG keeps a constant and, if necessary, critical watch over IBM's actions in the key areas of marketing, advertising and selling of Informix products.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born in Alton, Hampshire, one of the southern counties of England. Although I spent several years living in Australia, most of my life has been lived in or near London.

Q: Best Informix story?
A: In a way, as director of a company trying to sell Informix support, my best could have been one of the worst. We were commissioned by a major fashion retailer to look at disaster recovery options for their European warehouse operation, and also to audit the performance of two OnLine servers. Result: pages and pages of recommendations for the disaster recovery; yet we couldn't find a single thing to fault with the set-up of the OnLine operation, after almost a year of operation.

We got the DR business: one of the reasons given was that the client was impressed that we'd given the straight truth about the Informix systems!

Q: Worst Informix nightmare.
A: A restore of a 300GByte database following some corruption when an operator had inadvertently over-wrote the logical log tape! Er ....

Luckily, we had all the logs we needed on a combination of a second, later tape, and on the corrupt database itself. With judicious use of EMC BCV utilities, we kicked off the restore, whilst at the same time an Informix engineer dialed in and patched the logical logs as not backed up so we could salvage them to tape again.

The restore and roll-forward took 34 hours. When I issued the onmode -m at 5:00 in the morning and it came up, it was one of the happiest moments of my life. I guess I need to get out more!

Even this had a silver lining - we were awarded a £70k project to integrate EMC and onbar to bring recovery down from 34 hours to 2 hours!

Q: Can you tell us about your family and hobbies outside of the IIUG?
A: I'm married to lovely Jana. Her family is Dutch, though she can manage a few rudimentary words of English! Jana used to be in IT but got fed up with it, and is now a primary school teacher, specialising in Sports Science. I have a daughter Elissa, 10, and a son, David, 9.

I am keen on sport, going to gym classes like RPM regularly. I also play football and tennis. I like watching football too, and am a fan of perennial strugglers Port Vale, in the English Division Two.

Finally, I like wine, reading and travel.
