Insider Profiles IIUG Director Norma Jean Sebastian

Q: How do you use Informix in your "real" job (DBA, Consultant, Developer, etc.)?
A: Sadly, we shut down our last Informix database. We ran Informix under our SAP applications for years. My boss, previously an Oracle DBA, was very happy with Informix. We did not want to migrate.

Q: How long have you been using Informix products?
A: I was introduced to Informix in college and have been working with Informix since 1992. I started as an Informix 4GL developer and expanded into system administration and Informix database administration. I am triple Informix certified.

Q: What is your role on the IIUG Board?
A: Good question, whatever I am tasked to do, I will give it my best. At the time of this writing, I will be co-leading the Education-Outreach responsibility.

Q: Why did you volunteer to be on the board?
A: Informix is an awesome product. It has kept me gainfully and happily employed for 16 years. I am a positive contributor to the local Chicago user group. I volunteered to serve on the board as a servant to the IIUG community; to use my drive and energy to help increase awareness of Informix and development on Informix.

Q: What do you want to accomplish this year on the Board?
A: I am currently working toward my master's degree and desire to increase the presence of Informix in the academic arena. There has been some work done in this area, but it is something the community often brings up as an issue. Hopefully I can advance the awareness of Informix with future generations.

Q: Where are you from?
A: Wisconsin. Currently living in the Chicago area. (USA)

Q: Best Informix story?
A: Two stories. Through trials and tribulations, I learned a lot about Informix OnBar and Symantec Netbackup. Because of this, I was able to give an advanced presentation at both the Chicago User Group and the Informix track of the IDUG conference in 2007. Also meeting some of the Informix support personnel. One support person, after introducing himself, said he remembered my calls (some of which were quite lengthy).

Q: Worst Informix nightmare.
A: None. If I had any, they were so early on, I have forgotten. Any "corner" I have gotten stuck in with Informix has been one I could get out of by trusting Informix. Any potential nightmare turns into a "best" story.

Q: Can you tell us about your family and hobbies outside of IIUG?
A: My family is in Wisconsin. I have 4 brothers, no sisters. I enjoy going to Green Bay Packer football games with my dad, Zeke. I recently found out what a strong influence my mother, Alice, has been on Informix. The new ALICE index cleaners were named after her (see Mark Jamison's IIUG Conference presentation). My mom's name is Alice, but I am kidding about any influence on the IDS index cleaners. :) My hobbies are on hold while I pursue my master's degree, but I have had time to enjoy working on my friend's ranch in Montana.
