Insider Profiles IIUG Director Jean Georges Perrin

Q: How do you use Informix in your "real" job (DBA, Consultant, Developer, etc.)?
A: First of all, Dave (Smith, IIUG ENews), thanks for inviting me to this chat.

I have been developing applications for Informix for the last ten years. I started with 4GL applications and tools. For the last 5 years, I have been using IDS with Java.

Q: How long have you been using Informix products?
A: I think that all my colleagues on the board are seeing mostly Informix as the database company, but I love all the "classics". I have been playing with 4GL since 1997, and I love those small footprint Online and SE. Over time, I am now a hard-core IDS user implementing XML functionalities, Java UDRs and more.

Q: What is your role on the IIUG Board?
A: I am in charge of communications, we started a virtual press room, sponsorships, and more recently as we launched IIUG.tv.

Q: Why did you volunteer to be on the board?
A: In 2002, when I originally volunteered for the first time, it was a response to meeting a lot of Informix users concerned about their impression of Informix vanishing and feeling kind of left-out. Now the challenge is to help IBM gain market share, attract more developers. I remain an application developer in a world dominated by DBAs.

Q: What do you want to accomplish this year on the Board?
A: In 2002, I wanted to create a LUG in France. I have however, a lot of problems finding volunteers (call!), so I might expand my area of recruiting to French speaking countries in the region like Belgium, Switzerland and North Africa.

Now I wish all success to our 2008 conference.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Haguenau near Strasbourg in France. Strasbourg is the capital of a region called Alsace. Alsace had a very complex history as it has been the center part of a lot of wars between European countries, including Germany and France but not only. Between 1870 and 1945, Alsace changed citizenship 4 times. This mixed culture makes it unique.

Q: Best Informix story?
A: I had a server that went completely nuts. Very weird behavior. We could not even telnet / ssh to it. We connected to IDS, unloaded all the data to another machine. The server never rebooted. The disk was dead. The data was saved.

Q: Worst Informix nightmare.
A: I have had so much trouble with Client SDK that for a couple of years I decided not to install it anymore. Every time the issue came up I would fly away. And of course call someone for help. Now, I am just using JDBC anyway...

Q: Can you tell us about your family and hobbies outside of the IIUG?
A: I have been married to Marylène since 1997, she is great. We have two sons. Life is wonderful with the 3 of them.
