RE: Informix Backup with Veritas Netbackup

Posted By:
Date:

We faced same problem on out production system. we were getting error "Lock
table overflow - user id 3200", we added more locks at database level, but
it was giving same. Finally we find out which job is taking more locks and
modified the job. I am not abaper, but as I remember it was problem of
commit. frequency of commit was very less in that programm.

I hope this will you.

Are you sure the backup took up the locks, and not another programm,
which was calling the failuer of netbackup.

We use also netbackup and onbar to backup.
But I don't know how many locks he needs,
but I tink it is not that many.

We run only full backups online (so no incrementals).

I can imagine that another programm took all the locks,
after that al other sessions can be killed with
the meaning "No mor locks available",
but if you get this error, the problem can be al other
programm which took all the locks.

Se another mail from me tonight:
We have also 2000000 locks on a database of 1,1TB.
If it is not enough, I say always to look to the ABAP-programm,
or the variant.

Sometimes programms have build in a commit, if a job fails or make to many
locks the commit interval has to be reduced in the ABAP-programm (or
sometimes variant).

We have already 2000000 locks for many years, and it works fine.

With onstat -u, you can see which proces has many locks.
We also are called by phone automatically if more then 1000000 locks are in
use
(for 24 hours a day.)

Then we look with:
onstat -u to the locks and the SID,
then we look to onstat -g ses|grep <SID> and get the PID
You can see the PID back in SM66/SM50.
We tell it to the user (at office hours) and kill the SID with onmode -z or
use SM66/SM50.
If with onstat -u the third caracter is a R the transaction is rolling back
and will not take any locks any more, After the rollback (sometimes hours)
the problem is solved.

If you wait to long to kill the SAP-proces al other programms will be
failing with,
"no more locks available" and that's a pitty, so be on time, that's nicer.

No, I did not mix up the terms. I was attempting to do a whole database
backup, and my online log file as well as my bar act file showed that I ran
out of database locks (isam 134)

My logical logs at that poing were fine.

Well, I'm afraid you mixed up two terms e.g. "lock" and "log".
You can backup only logical LOGS and not LOCKS. LOCK is a configuration
performance parameter in ONCONFIG.
Performing a backup you will have the logical logs with complete Informix
instance, as well.
But you can also backup your logical logs separately if you wish.

Regards,
Janusz.

Hello,

I hope someone out there can shed some light into this. I just attempted
to
run a backup with netbackup, but the backup took up all of the available
locks. My onconfig file locks parameter is set to 2 million locks.

And although we were trying to run a backup during business hours, ours is
a
production system that is also hit heavily at night because of running
batch
jobs.

Can anyone tell me why I ran out of locks and if there are any onconfig
parameters I need to change?

Thank you in advance.
