In Response To: Informix data warehouses & onbar (NormaJean.Sebastian@tellabs.com)

We always do hot backups on our BW system and there's been no impact on the
users. Unfortunately, our BW system is probably not 'big' enough to give
you an all encompassing answer to put Oracle in its place. Database is
about 400 GB but 1/3 of that is staging data which our BW folks won't let go
of (supposed to be temporary holding place where BW takes imported data and
massages it for loading into the actual cubes). We only have 10 - 20 users
on there at any one time. So we don't stress it. But you can say under
Informix 9.30 our BW is up 24 hours a day. Its (hot) backup runs about
3:00 PM every day in parallel with daily users and data loads. The only
time BW is unavailable to users is an occasional Sunday when the DBA has it
for planned maintenance. We use onbar with HP Omniback on HP Unix servers
and a tape library with 4 drives. Our Unix admin has that piece so I'm not
sure how long it takes but it's under two hours - full backup every day.

Subject: Informix data warehouses & onbar [356]

Hi,

I have not yet been fortunate enough to work on an Informix data
warehouse, I am wondering if Informix 7.31 and/or 9.40 perform as
admirably in a data warehouse environment as in an OLTP.

Specifically in terms of data backup in conjunction with transaction
processing.

Those of you with an Informix warehouse using onbar backups.... have
you seen dramatic i/o throughput problems impacting user performance
perhaps during data load times if the backup is running, etc?....
problems to the degree that you have had to come up with a unique backup
solution because Informix could not handle it?
I am seeking information as a curiosity (and potential fuel)... I
believe Informix would do just fine in such a scenario (if the server
itself is not thrashing,etc).

I have been told that we should not do "hot backups" of our SAP BW
system on Oracle because Oracle will not handle the load of a hot
backup, transaction logging, and a data load at the same time
efficiently. Granted, the hot backup window could be adjusted somewhat
around the data load time, but transaction logging on an oracle data
warehouse was more or less "poo pooed",
therefore... the DB comes down for cold backups. That just seems silly
to me.

thanks for the input.
Norma Jean
