Sudden surge in Virtual Memory segments

Posted By: Darrell Murphy
Date: Tuesday, 7 October 2003, at 12:45 p.m.

Informix has suddenly started using a lot of virtual memory segments. We
crashed once because it sucked up all the memory we had free (about 9 GB on
a server with 16 GB total memory). When looking at our "af" files, OSS and
Informix said we were had a lot of processes using lots of memory. This is
the busiest time of year for us (snowboards and clothing) so there is a lot
going on in the system. We get a long transaction abort almost every
night. I've been trying to track this from an application point of view
trying to find the programs which are using the most resources. No one
program causes the long transaction, it's the cumulative effect of all the
programs running that I feel really causes the problem. I'm looking at
big batch programs to see if there are large queries which can be narrowed
down, "select*" that doesn't need to be there and all those types of things.
We haven't had this problem since going 64 bit two years ago so I'm not sure
why it's showing up now.

Anyone else run into this?

Here's the environment:

HP-UX 11i (Superdome)
Informix 7.31.FD2X9
SAP 4.6C

Here are the onconfig parameters I'd consider relevant:

RESIDENT 1 # Forced residency flag (Yes = 1, No = 0)
LOCKS 3000000 # Maximum number of locks
BUFFERS 1048576 # Maximum number of shared buffers
CLEANERS 127 # Number of buffer cleaner processes
SHMVIRTSIZE 2048000 # initial virtual shared memory segment size
SHMADD 524288 # Size of new shared memory segments
(Kbytes)
SHMTOTAL 0 # For FD2X9, must be 0.
MAX_PDQPRIORITY 100 # Maximum allowed pdqpriority
DS_MAX_QUERIES 12 # Maximum number of decision support
queries
DS_TOTAL_MEMORY 8192000 # Decision support memory (Kbytes)
DS_MAX_SCANS 16 # Maximum number of decision support scans
DATASKIP off # List of dbspaces to skip

Thanks
