Managing apparel footwear in SAP without AFS?

This is of organizations dealing in apparel and or footwear but NOT using
SAP's AFS module. Looking for tips or practices on how you manage and
classify that data. For example, how do you store the fact that a garment
is a jacket - using product hierarchy, material group or user defined fields
in MARA? Or maybe a 'Z' table? How do you store the components and fabric
types - are there SAP tables for that or did you end up creating your own?

I realize this is as much a config question as it is database, but I'm
wondering if any of you DBA's have dealt with these issues. Open to any
views of either R/3 or BW since we use both.

Thanks,

Darrell Murphy
Burton Snowboards (which actually makes a lot of clothing).
