RE: 64-bit version of RedBrick

We upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit last year on an HP machine and it was
very easy. We didn't have to unload and reload the data - I'm suprised you
were told that. The only issue I remember was that the views needed to be
recreated and that was not a big deal at all. Hope this info helps.

Oksana,

We used to have RedBrick running on a 32-bit HP machine and now we are
running 32-bit RedBrick Server on a 64-bit HP machine and it is working
fine. We like to switch to 64-bit RedBrick, but according to RedBrick
Technical Support, we cannot run 64-bit Redbrick against our existing
database because it was created with 32-bit RedBrick. The only way to
migrate to 64-bit RedBrick is to unload all the existing data, recreate the
database using 64-bit RedBrick and load the data back into the new
database.

Oksana

We have been using 64-bit RedBrick for over 7 years on a DEC/Compaq TRU64
platform.

We are currently migrating to an IBM AIX platform, also running 64-bit.

We have had no special issues.

However, some things to consider:

(1) Are your 32-bit and 64-bit platforms the same (e.g. AIX, Solaris, etc)
(2) If they are not the same, do they have the same binary endianness
- RS6000, Sun, HP, etc are Big Endian
- Alpha and Intel are Little Endian

If you are crossing platforms or changing endianness, then you have to
think
real strongly about later recoverability of old backups.

I hope this helps.

Bill

Hello all!
We are getting a new machine and would like to switch to 64-bit addressing.
Does anybody know some special issues about migrating to 64-bit Redbrick
Server? Have you met any troubles or unexpected results?

Thank you for every advice or suggestion,
