RE: Backup tools/hardware for Redbrick

Thanks justin.. We use versioning but our current backup procedure begins postload so there is enough time to sync between versions and the real segments/tables.
Can you let me know, what back up software/hardware your backup or admin department use for their backups.. and how fast it is? that would help me a lot..
Thanks again justin.

Here are my thoughts.
If you are using versioning and want a completely valid backup, you
should terminate all connections and drop the version log before a backup.
This will ensure nothing gets versioned and avoids possible corruption.
If your application is creating "real" tables (opposed to temporary
tables) such as MicroStrategy, all activity must stop for a backup.
No loads can be running during a backup.
If you are not using Versioning, the application is not creating
tables and not loads are running, then I would think a online backup would
work. Maybe one of the Red Brick folks can confirm or deny this....

I am not sure what we are using for our backup facility, I only know
it is a straight UNIX file backup. A different department deals with all
our backups. I can find out the specifics if you like.

Subject: Backup tools/hardware for Redbrick [50]

Hello all

We have about 1 TB of Redbrick DB on RS/6000 AIX. I am looking for

a) Best practices for full/incremental backup of the Database. (The load
cycle is Daily)

b) Are there any products such as veritas, tivoli, legato that works well
with redbrick

c) can the online backup option provided by redbrick be used? if so how
effective it is? and does that work well with the above tools?

d) any recommended tape libraries/drive system?

all your help will be much appreciated.

thanks in advance
Radha.
