Hi John,

I haven't had this problem before, but I googled around and it seems like people are having similiar problems when they are using autoconf in FreeBSD.

In FreeBSD ports there are many autoconfs : autoconf213, autoconf253, autoconf259, autoconf261, etc. intended for building software on a FreeBSD system.

If you look into the phpize file and search for the phpize_check_autotools() function, does it look like the following?

test -z "$PHP_AUTOCONF" && PHP_AUTOCONF=autoconf
test -z "$PHP_AUTOHEADER" && PHP_AUTOHEADER=autoheader

if test ! -x "`$php_shtool path $PHP_AUTOCONF`"; then

Cannot find autoconf. Please check your autoconf installation and the \$PHP_AUTOCONF
environment variable is set correctly and then rerun this script.

EOF

exit 1
fi
if test ! -x "`$php_shtool path $PHP_AUTOHEADER`"; then

Cannot find autoheader. Please check your autoconf installation and the \$PHP_AUTOHEADER
environment variable is set correctly and then rerun this script.

If so, you can create a symbolic link named "autoconf" to point to autoconf213/autoconf253/autoconf259 etc. This might solve the problem.

Also, you might notice that $php_shtool is set in the phpize script, and used later. It's also possible that this or the build dir are not being set properly. If the symbolic link method doesn't work, I think you may look into this or the build dir.
