Clicking Mark all messages read is OK, though I seldom want to do that
until I've read about half of them to decide that each topic has been
answered adequately (or is outside my scope).

Exiting the browser because I've lost track of where in the list of 38
messages I've got to is not OK - as a user interface, that stinks. It
doubly stinks if I have to renegotiate a login process. [Actually, it
isn't necessary, either; a Refresh seems to do an update -- at least, after
a period of some hours -- but I still don't know which ones I've read (the
NEW is gone, but so is any indication of whether I've read it or not). The
problem is likely to be an issue of state -- for each user, you need to
track the detailed state of their reading, which is typically done in
client-side code using client-side data. Anyway, for a forum like this
to be useful, I need to know as I read what I've read -- which needs to be
thought of as sounding like "I need to know as I reed what I've red". I'm
sorry, but every mail program I've used and every news reader program I
recall using has done that for me, and I don't plan to give up on the
requirement. And I need a way to go back and find older messages, even
after I've read them. If you haven't already used a browser to read a news
group, you need to do so, and review the services it provides. Then get as
close to that functionality as possible. One 'easy' way to do that is to
create a news group on the IIUG web server and let the client browsers do
their stuff. You can demand username and password authentication via NNTP
(or, at least, my ISV does that to me, per news group).]

According to my preferences, I have threaded display with mixed order set -
the default. The display was fine and threaded. The problem was that
after looking at a message, there was no indication that I didn't need to
look at the message again, and given the idiosyncratic way MSIE (yes, I was
actually using that browser, not Netscape) was relocating me when I got out
of a thread, it was not easy to see what I had already looked at and what I
hadn't. Note, I haven't griped about the somewhat over-wrought NEW flags
where an understated bullet would also work quite nicely. That comes in
the category of "does not have to be identical". I haven't asked about the
time zone associated with messages.

The list mechanism may become a very useful tool. It has a way to go as
yet.

Hi Jonathan,

In answer to your functionality issues:

- To mark messages as "read", click on the "Mark All Messages Read" link in

the upper right of the screen. Alternative, you can close the browser and
the
next time you visit the site, the "New" flag will be removed.

- The board supports threaded message display. Pick your preferred style by

clicking on "Set Preferences" in the menu. There is a good write-up there
on
all the options. I think what you're looking for is:

List Style: Threaded List
Display Style: Single Message
Sort Order: Mixed Order

By the way, the above styles are now the default for new users. You must
have
visited the forum for the first time before the default was changed from
simple list.

Thanks for the feedback.
