Doubts about IDS and Linux

Posted By:
Date:

We are starting to have strong doubts in basing our solutions on IDS with Linux.

1)
We develop 99% of our code in C++, and we use STL. For this reason we need to compile using the 3.x version of GCC (its STL package fixes a multithread bug).
We cannot link our code with the actual C++ Informix Library (neither we will do with the SDK 2.81 that will released with IDS 9.40 as confirmed during its announce webcast).
We asked as a favor to have it compiled with the last GCC version, and, even if the team answered they would provide such library in a small amount of time (just recompilation), we are still waiting. This happened about 55 days (team answer was dated January 31st) ago and now the problem is growing exponentially as we are approaching a testing milestone that is going to fail.
Note that this is a pioneer project for the European Space Agency that, for the first time, allowed us to use LINUX and Informix into an operational environment.

2)
IDS 9.3x and 9.40 are not going to run on RedHat 8.0 and upcoming 9 (formerly known as 8.1). The main reason is the GLIBC 2.2.93-5 provided with the RH 8.0 release. Informix support says that with this version IDS has a network problem, what can we do with a database server unable to connect with its clients ?
The technical support tried to bypass the problem using the GLIBC 2.3.2-4.80, but they failed again, because the main IDS process is unable to create child processes. Seems that we are stuck on RedHat prior 8.0 release, but as an industrial standard, our customer claim to have the State-of-the-art in terms of support, security and whatsoever.

As you can see, fixing point 1 will only give us the chance to gain time, anyway we expect IBM will soon support newer Linux distribution as well, otherwise they are going to be obsolete in a very few time (RedHat 9 will be release on April 7th as announced on RH website).

We are waiting a response from IBM that will help us in planning a strategy for the very next future as we are going to participate to another big European bid and to cut-off risks we are evaluating other database solutions.

Regards.
