I know you said you don't want to use ER, but I don't remember if there was a
reason. ER is exactly what you want. You will avoid all of the conflict
resolution code you would have to do if you use a trigger based solution. IB
you could handle all of the column remappings that way and when they are too
complex you could use a trigger based mapping to a set of local 'replication
tables' that could then be replicated using ER to the tables on the other
server. The local triggers won't have to deal with conflicts and they will
simplify the mappings between the servers for the ER definitions. Think
outside the box.

Well, I believe I need separate physical tables because they are not identical
in structure (sometimes there are additional columns, sometimes there are
fewer columns, sometimes there are different column names, sometime two tables
in database1 are combined into one table in database2, etc.).

Background: The overall goal is to replace the legacy database with a new
database (structure changes are required), where new code communicates with
the new database in real-time and old code still communicates with the old
database in real-time. So, we are hoping to store a lot of the same data
redundantly and possibly use triggers in order to accomplish this. Fun, huh?
