Re: G. Ben-Israel (product strategies)

In Response To: RE: URGENT- NEED ISQL 7.X for MS-DOS (Gary Ben-Israel)

In response to Gary Ben-Israel's posting I have this to express:

1. 4GL needs to have its own Windows/Linux GUI, C.A.S.E. and 4GL code generator

if IBM wants INFORMIX to compete with Oracle, Access, Foxpro, etc.

2. Informix should have an "isql-like" GUI version for "sophisticated users"

(non-programmers) to easily design and develop: schemas, procedures,

forms, reports, etc. (ALL BUNDLED INTO A SINGLE PRODUCT !)

This would capture a big end-user market which does not want to spend money

to hire programmers, unless they can't handle it totally. Many small

businesses that need only one workstation do this and that market sector is

huge, unless IBM is not interested in it.

I have 12 years experience as a Product Planner and Manager for RDBMS products
with a Fortune 100 company and while I worked there I asked many end-users what
they were LOOKING FOR and LISTENED! I also studied: market trends, business owner attitudes/psycology and what the competition was addressing that we were not. Granted, many end-users don't know what they want or how to properly put it together, but psycologically, they initially feel like they can develop applications without the need to hire outside help, and some do a decent job of it. When it gets to hairy they call upon a professional, but they want to try it first. Remember that times are different and many business owners want to avoid spending money. They regard software development as being overpaid and have a notion that computers are so technologically advanced that

"EVEN A CAVEMAN CAN DO IT !!!
