Kate,

Third-party support for Informix products has been an issue with our
company for some time. Waning third-party support is used by database
platform decision makers in our company as examples of why we need to
replace Informix with other databases. Those of us who work directly
with Informix and other databases are convinced of the technical
advantages of Informix. Unfortunately, the people making decisions
about which databases we use do not have any technical experience with
them.

As for third-party vendor support, we have two vendors which immediately

come to mind: BMC and MapInfo.

We have used BMC's SQL-BackTrack as our storage manager with On-Bar for
many years. The product itself works very well for us. Unfortunately,
BMC has threatened to not support future versions of IDS. This threat
has been around for many versions, and they always seem to back down and

eventually support the newer versions. Their latest version, 3.7.01, is
only supported for IDS 10.0 and is not certified for earlier IDS
versions. Also, it is certified only for AIX and HP and it is not
supported under Solaris. It is becoming increasingly apparent that
their threat of non-support is getting stronger.

We have also used MapInfo for many years for several of our applications

which use geospatial data. One of these applications uses MapInfo
heavily for it's front end. MapInfo said they will no longer support
the Informix geospatial datablade beginning with IDS 10.0. They have
offered to supply stored procedures which we can install and use with
their product, but they will no longer support the Informix datablade
itself.
