Spécialiste de l’analyse climatique, Météo consult commercialise ses
prévisions auprès des entreprises et des particuliers.

Compte tenu des grosses quantités de données à gérer, Météo Consult a migré
en janvier 2004 vers la base de données open source MySQL 4.1. En effet, son
site web basé sur Apache et PHP commençait à rencontrer « des problèmes de
montée en charge qui auraient impliqué de lourds investissements si nous
restions totalement sous Informix, un SGBD que nous utilisions depuis 1996 »
explique Gilbert Boneill, directeur informatique de l’entreprise. MySQL a
été retenu pour de nombreuses raisons comme ses performances exceptionnelles
pour les gros volumes en lecture.

Après avoir gardé entre 2004 et 2006 ses deux systèmes de base de données
(Informix et Mysql), Météo Consult a basculé en mars 2006 l’ensemble de ses
données sous MySQL 5.0. Aujourd’hui, sa base MySQL comporte un millier de
tables, qui stockent environ 20 Go de données exploitables par une
cinquantaine d’applications.

Après plusieurs années, le bilan de cette migration est positif. « Nous
encaissons de fortes montées en charge sans avoir à investir dans des
serveurs surpuissants. La facilité d’administration et la fiabilité de MySQL
nous font gagner du temps et de l’argent, d’autant que nous n’avons plus de
coûts de licences », résume Gilbert Boneill.

Je veux bien croire qu'il puisse faire des economies sur les licences (et
pour 20Go de données faut pas non plus 3 milliards de machine), mais sur les
perfs, là faut pas pousser mémé!
