Oops that one got away from me too soon.

Yes, what you want to do will work fine as long as the production and test
machines are the same architecture (ie both Sparc or both Intel, etc.).
Shutdown the 32bit instance and use its ontape/onbar to restore the 32bit
archive. Bring the engine online and do what you need to do. Then you can
shut it down and either convert it to 64bit using the 64bit version or
restore the original 64bit database from its archive.

Thank you Art, thank you David too for yours answers.
I came back with a new questions on the same subject.

It is not a 'downgrade to 32bit' : I need for 32bit for short time and
after I will finish I want to come back on 64bit.

In fact I need to restore a database from production into a test server.
In production server I have an IDS 940 UC2.
On the test server I have an IDS 940 FC7 (with SOLARIS 10). Due to a
lack of machines I have to restore the server backup in 32bit format

over a server in 64bit. For the 32bit version I have not disk space to
make its own server configuration . I want to use the same disk spaces
as were used for 64bit server.

Now I have installed the IDS 940 UC2 into a different directory than

it was used for IDS 940 FC7.
I have configured the new environment (INFORMIXDIR, ONCONFIG, SQLHOSTS)
for 32bit
and I'm able to start the 32bit server. My server in 32bit it is ONLINE
but_ I think that the conversion does not complete._

In the online.log file I did not found any conversion errors , even the
message like 'Conversion completed successfully' it is not present there.
I performed the oncheck commands as are detailed into the doc (Migrating

to Dynamic Server 9.40 or 9.30 from 9.x, 7.3x, or 7.24) and no errors
were reported there.
When I try to make the L0 backup of the 32bit server it does not work:
- if the server it is ONLINE and I start the "ontape -s -L 0" - the

server crashes and I receive the error:
/"Archive failed - buc_fe.c : Archive API processing failed at line 236
for msgtype"

/- if the server it is OFFLINE and I start the "ontape -s -L 0" - the

backup stops and I receive the error:
/"Server is in an incompatible state or user authentication failed."

/Please let me know what I did wrong.

For me now this backup L0 it is not important because I do not need for

it. I need to restore over it a different backup in 32bit format.
Later, when I will finish with it I want to restore over it the backup
of 64bit server ( I made it before stating the server conversion) and I

want to start the
64bit server. It will work?

Thank you for your help,
Elena
