In Response To: Visualization tools for Geodetic Datablade? (Ken Tanaka)

Hi, Ken,

I ran your email by the folks who are the most savvy
about Geodetic and are summarizing various tips below.

First, one clarification. The ESRI tools will display
data that uses data types from the Spatial DataBlade,
so the same ESRI tools that work for Oracle will also
work for Informix. However, those ESRI tools do not display
data that uses data types from the Geodetic DataBlade.

An OpenMap application ships with the Geodetic DataBlade.
See the $INFORMIXDIR/extend/geodetic.<rel>/java directory.

Geodyssey LTD (http://www.geodyssey.com) produces a
Georamix (Georama for Informix) application for Windows.
If you're interested, contact John Russell at
jmahlon@geodyssey.com .

Ed Katibah mentioned an Open Source project called MapServer
that is freely available from http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu.
This is an ArcIMS-like spatial webserver. Ed thinks that
with some help you could get MapServer working with the
Geodetic DataBlade by using the projection functions
in the Spatial DataBlade. If you're interested in this and
need some help, contact Ed at ekatibah@us.ibm.com.

regards,

-jean

Hi,

I'm looking for some basic graphing tools to see what is in a geodetic
datablade. I have some country outlines and satellite footprints and
would like to generate some quick pictures during development to see if
things are showing up and overlapping as I expect.

What tools are people using to visualize data in the geodetic datablade?
I'm familiar with ESRI tools such as ArcMap and ArcCatalog on top of
ESRI's SDE and Oracle Spatial. I'm wondering what the counterparts are
in the Informix world.

I would like to hear any recommendations on what's available and how
much it is. I'd explore free and opensource solutions first, since
licensing is an added complexity, but not an insurmountable hurdle. At
some point we might need something along the lines of ArcIMS to produce
images of what we have in the Informix datablades (Gridded and Spatial
datablades in addition to the Geodetic datablade tables) to aid GIS /
geospatial data searches on the Web.

I've looked a little at BBN's OpenMap, but haven't gotten that to
connect to our informix system yet. So if you can offer some advice, it
may just be some configuration file hints I need to get going there.

Thanks,
-Ken
