Ang: Out of dbspace. Why? [Fwd: Ang: Re: dbimport [377]] [400]

Hi everyone!

The dbimport I had problems with is now OK.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me with advice and suggestions,
especially Art S Kagel, Jean Briere, Nestor Gomez Munoz and Peter van Eck.

The problem was that I did'n realize how much sorting space it needed, and
in what order it used the sorting space.

When I did the first dbimport, the PSORT_DBTEMP was set to

/usr/opt/lpi/tmp

And I had only one tempdbspace

Since the system had worked so far with this settings, I thougt that it
would work for dbexport and dbimport for the whole database.
The dbexport was OK.
But when I tried to do the dbimport it run out of space.

I tried to add more tempdbspaces but that did not work.

I did not understand that if the PSORT_DBTEMP is set, it uses the
filesystems specified in that variable to sort in, and don't use the
tempdbspaces at all. (Right, Art?)

So I created 3 file system, each had the size of 900 Mb. The database was
app 1800 Mb.
The file systems for the sort was spcified in the PSORT_DBTEMP variable.

(I also had one tempdbspace, but the dbimport did not use that)

Then I set the following variables in the .profile for the user, lpiadm,
who should do the dbimport:

PDQPRIORITY=100 # Enables parallel sort and assigns all resource to load
PSORT_NPROCS=20 # Enables parallel sort w/20 scan/sort threads
PSORT_DBTEMP=<a list of at least 3 (5 is best) filesystems w/space>
DBUPSPACE=250000 # Increases amount of sort-work kept in memory at once

In the onconfig-file I changed the BUFFER from 800 til 50000 and NUMCPUVPS
from 1 to 3.

Then I started the dbimport again and this time it worked.
It created 3 large sortfiles in two of the file systems spcified in
PSORT_DBTEMP, and 2 sortfiles in the third

The time the dbimbort took was 4 h.

So now it's OK and the users seems satisfied.
But you never can be too sure about them ...

regards

Anders

I can't realize why dbimport didn't follow with the other chunks. As I
think Anders not post this message to the list, I'm posting it again for
you help.
