IBM Feedback Request (JDBC Driver Changes)

Folks, Linda Barry of IBM Data Management has requested feedback on the
following:

We are making some changes to the JDBC driver and are wondering about
getting some input from the IIUG in a relatively informal manner. There
are two major changes.

1) We are dropping support for version 1.2 of the driver.
2) We are changing the encryption feature and the obfuscating plan for JDBC
2.21.JC5.

Encryption:
The JDBC 2.21.JC5 driver will support a low-level encryption mechanism that
will allow it to communicate with an encryption-enabled IDS server. Using
this mechanism, all data packets to and from JDBC will be transmitted in a
secure fashion, thus reducing (if not eliminating) the potential for a
security violation by a non-authorized user. End users will have the
ability to turn on or off the encryption feature depending on the level of
security they desire.


Obfuscating the JDBC driver:
The JDBC 2.21.JC5 driver will be obfuscated in order to preserve IBM's
technical knowledge investment in the JDBC driver. More importantly,
obfuscating the driver will inhibit (if not completely remove) the ability
of malicious users to decompile the JDBC driver in attempts to compromise
an IDS server. The downside of obfuscating the driver is that exceptions
thrown by the JDBC driver will become virtually meaningless, as the method
names, variable names, etc... will have been obfuscated and thus be
nonsense.
