Editorial Back to top

The next two editorials will be dedicated to the IIUG conference in Kansas. This one talks about what is going to be and the next will be a recap of the best Informix conference ever.

You have heard so much about the value of conferences that it seems there is nothing new to be said. Yet this conference, like the one we had last year, is unlike any other Informix conference. It’s much more than the number and quality of sessions and speakers – it is a gathering of the Informix family. It is this unique combination of size and atmosphere that makes it possible to really meet and get to know developers, executives and colleagues.

If you still have doubts, I have one more reason for you to come. Everyone who registers makes a difference. If you want to help the IIUG to have a bigger and better conference next year, come to this one. Help build the momentum. If you are not sure about coming this year or next year, or to this conference or another, come to the IIUG conference in Kansas. This is the place to be in April 2009.

Be sure to read the conference corner. Learn about our conference and tell evryone you know. I would personally like to meet you all.

See you soon!

IBM Activities at the IIUG Conference

IBM is excited to be a sponsor of the 2009 IIUG conference. The IIUG conference team has developed an excellent program, with a wide variety of technical content from well-known experts in the Informix community. In addition, IBM has a number of not-to-be missed activities at the conference. Here’s what we think are the top 5 reasons you shouldn’t miss the conference:

5 People – Meet executives, architects and engineers from IBM.
You will have a number of opportunities to hear from IBM executives at keynote sessions, including Arvind Krishna, Vice President, Data Management and Worldwide Information Management Development, who will speak on Monday morning and Anant Jhingan, Distinguished Engineer, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Information Management on Tuesday morning. Bring your questions for a panel of IBM executives on Wednesday, including Alyse Passarelli, IBM Worldwide Database Vice President of Sales and Inhi Cho, IBM Worldwide Vice President of Database Marketing.

Many of your favorite IBM architects and engineers will be attending the conference, and the local IBM team is invited to attend the Monday night reception. They are all eager to talk with you and answer your questions. This brings us to reason number 4 in our countdown:

4 Get questions answered and give input to future product direction at Birds of a Feather Sessions and the Usability Sandbox.
New this year are the Birds of a Feather sessions on Monday evening. These are informal Q&A sessions with a panel of experts on these topics:

  • Informix Warehouse and Business Intelligence solutions, led by Jerry Keesee and Fred Ho, Program Director
  • DBA solutions for Informix DBAs, led by Kevin Brown, the Informix chief architect
  • Application development solutions for Informix developers, led by Jacques Roy, technical product managers
  • Virtualization and Cloud Computing, led by Guy Bowerman, Informix architect
  • Sign up for the Usability Sandbox to give your input into the future of IBM products.

For those who prefer a one-on-one conversation about your Informix implementation, here’s reason number 3:

3 Private meetings
You can schedule a private meeting at the conference by signing up at the IBM Information Desk, or send a meeting request ahead of time to Cathy Elliott (cathyell@us.ibm.com) to reserve your time with an IBM executive or engineer. These meetings can include a more in-depth discussion of the product demos you saw in the exhibit hall – reason number 2:
2 Exhibit Hall Demos
IBM and business partners will be presenting live demonstrations of the latest Informix technology in the conference exhibit hall. Visit the IBM booth to talk with product experts and see demonstrations of IDS in action with the latest Informix Warehouse and deep compression features. Explore the latest administration savings features in the OpenAdmin Tool and Data Studio offerings. Find out how IDS is integrated with other IBM products and how they can bring value to your solutions, including solidDB®, Optim®, Cognos®, and a few other surprises.

And the number 1 reason you shouldn’t miss the conference:

IBM’s Half-Baked Cloud Strategy

With years of experience, hundreds of customers, partnerships with Google and Amazon, and growing portfolio of on-demand services, why doesn’t IBM get more respect as a leader in the cloud computing market? Because IBM isn’t a player in the hottest areas of the market: platforms as a service, infrastructure as a service, and Amazon S3-style storage as a service. Customers looking to deploy virtualized IBM software stacks (DB2, Informix, WebSphere Portal) in the cloud, must turn to Amazon, which offers it, not IBM, which doesn’t.
